Doggie Day Out

Doggie Day Out is when a lucky pup gets to take a break from the shelter for a couple of hours. By taking them out for just a few hours a day, our temporary residents can exert pent up energy as well as be mentally stimulated to new experiences and people!

As a result of a Doggie Day Out, our dogs are less anxious or exuberant when they meet potential adopters and they gain useful life skills that they wouldn’t get from just sitting and waiting in the shelter. Another added bonus is that people who aren’t likely to come into shelters are still able to see our available animals!

All volunteer opportunities require a $35 membership fee and completion of our Virtual Safety & Protocols training. Your membership includes an Anderson Humane volunteer t-shirt, name tag, and helps support the ongoing needs of our volunteer program. Your membership remains active as long as there is consistent volunteer activity; if there is no activity for 3 months, it will expire unless you request a leave of absence.

Is there a minimum age to participate in Doggie Day Out?

You must be 18 to foster or participate in Doggie Day Out. An adult needs to have responsibility for the safety and care of the animal.

What kind of places can I take dogs during a Doggie Day Out?

We ask that you don’t take the dog to a dog park or other places where animals frequent. But long walks and hikes on trails are fine.

What if there is a medical concern for a Shelter Pup during a Doggie Day Out Adventure?

Email clinic@ahconnects.org. For emergencies, call Anderson Humane’s emergency line: 847-697-2880 x. 52. This line is monitored 24 hours a day.

How do I sign up to participate in Doggie Day Out?

Please complete the registration form above. After registering, you’ll receive a receipt with a link to the Volunteer Information Form, which includes all required virtual training. Once completed, you’ll be scheduled for your first Doggie Day Out.

What happens if someone inquires about adopting during a Doggie Day Out adventure?

Outstanding! Please connect that person with our front desk by calling our main line or emailing info@ahconnects.org to set up a meet and greet! Tell them to make sure to include the dog’s name!

Can I promote the dog I take on a Doggie Day Out?

Short Answer? YES! Dogs that go on our Doggie Day Out adventures are available for adoption. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Foster Team at fosters@ahconnects.org, or if you have questions on HOW to promote, reach out to our Social Media & Marketing Manager at mpropheter@ahconnects.org
