Doggie Day Out

Doggie Day Out is when a lucky pup gets to take a break from the shelter for a couple of hours. By taking them out for just a few hours a day, our temporary residents can exert pent up energy as well as be mentally stimulated to new experiences and people!

As a result of a Doggie Day Out, our dogs are less anxious or exuberant when they meet potential adopters and they gain useful life skills that they wouldn’t get from just sitting and waiting in the shelter. Another added bonus is that people who aren’t likely to come into shelters are still able to see our available animals!

Is there a minimum age to participate in Doggy Day Out?

You must be 18 to foster or participate in Doggy Day Out. An adult needs to have responsibility for the safety and care of the animal.

How long will we have the foster animal?

The fostering period lasts from a few days to a few months. We’ll find the right foster match for you based on your ability and availability.

What kind of places can I take dogs during a Doggy Day Out?

We ask that you don’t take the dog to a dog park or other places where animals frequent. But long walks and hikes on trails are fine.

What if there is a medical concern for a Shelter Pup during a Doggy Day Out Adventure?

Email clinic@ahconnects.org. For emergencies, call Anderson Humane’s emergency line: 847-697-2880 x. 52. This line is monitored 24 hours a day.

How do I sign up to participate in Doggy Day Out?

Please fill out this form. Once we receive your application, we will send you an orientation video and handbook, call to answer any questions, and set up your first foster placement.

What happens if someone inquires about adopting during a doggy day out adventure?

Outstanding! Please connect that person with our front desk by calling our main line or emailing info@ahconnects.org to set up a meet and greet! Tell them to make sure to include the dog’s name!

Can I promote the dog I take on a Doggy Day Out?

Short Answer? YES! Dogs that go on our Doggy Day Out adventures are available for adoption. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Foster Team at fosters@ahconnects.org, or if you have questions on HOW to promote, reach out to our Social Media & Marketing Manager at mpropheter@ahconnects.org
