Animal Surrender

We understand that giving up a pet can be difficult.

As a “no kill,” limited admission humane society, we are committed to zero euthanasia of adoptable animals in our care. Because the number of animals needing our assistance exceeds our adoption rate, we cannot immediately accept every animal that comes to us. The number of new animals we can accept is dictated by available kennel spaces at the shelter. For this reason, we are able to accept incoming animals by appointment only.

The Best Option for your Pet

The best possible option for your pet to stay with you.  We have resources available to help with behavioral challenges and financial hardship.

Behavior

If you are surrendering your pet due to behavior issues, we offer a Behavior Helpline that could provide you knowledge and guidance to help manage unwanted behaviors. To utilize this resource, please contact our behavior team at behaviorhotline@ahconnects.org.

Financial Hardship

If you cannot afford routine medical care for your pet, we offer low-cost spay/neuter clinics. For more information about this, please contact: spayneuter@ahconnects.org or 847-697-2880 ext. 27

STAR Short-Term Animal Refuge

The STAR program is designed as a safety net for people experiencing homelessness, a domestic violence situation, or low-income seniors requiring hospital care who don’t have other resources available to care for their pet. Click here to learn more.

The Second Best Option for your Pet

The second best option is to find your pet a home. We encourage you to check out the Adopt-a-Pet rehoming tool which allows you to be more involved in the adoption process. Adopt-a-Pet has staff dedicated to reviewing posts to prevent abuse, making it a safer alternative to online marketplaces. To utilize this resource, click here.
