Plan a good outing

Keep it simple and safe.

Walks, hikes and quiet adventures

Choose calm places where your dog can explore comfortably.

Skip dog parks and busy pet areas

Avoid places where unfamiliar animals frequently gather.

Bring their story back

Photos can help the right person notice them.

Share how the dog travels, explores and connects outside the shelter. The details you bring back can help potential adopters imagine a life together.

Bloomingdale

Monday–Friday: 8 a.m.–12 p.m.
Saturday: 8–11 a.m.
Sunday: 9–11 a.m.

South Elgin

Monday–Friday: 10:30 a.m.–4 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday: 10:15 a.m.–12 p.m.

Hours may change because of events, holidays, dog availability or animal transports.

Frequently asked questions

What if a medical concern comes up?

Email lowcost@ahconnects.org For emergencies, call 847-697-2880, extension 52. The emergency line is monitored 24 hours a day.

What if someone wants to adopt the dog?

Connect them with the front desk at 847-697-2880, extension 3 or email info@ahconnects.org to arrange a meet and greet. Make sure to include the dog’s name.

Can I share the dog on social media?

Yes. Sharing their personality can help an available dog find a home!

Does the membership expire?

It remains active with consistent volunteering. After three months without activity, it expires unless you request a leave of absence.

What is the volunteer onboarding process like?

Start by completing the registration form and paying the $35 volunteer membership fee. You’ll then receive a link to the Volunteer Information Form and required virtual Safety & Protocols training. Once you’ve completed those steps, our team will help schedule your first Doggie Day Out.
