We are seeking a part-time veterinary technician who is proficient in the medical care of dogs and cats to join our mission-driven clinic team working at our South Elgin shelter and South Elgin clinic location. Compensation is $18.00 per hour. Typical duties require our veterinary technicians to work closely with and provide crucial support to our clinic manager and veterinarians in a collaborative environment providing high-quality healthcare to our companion animals and exceptional service to our clients.
What you’ll do
- Handle and restrain patients with skill, high level of care, and compassion while being attentive to their needs and well-being.
- Treat all animals humanely with compassion, regardless of circumstance; promote a caring attitude toward animals.
- Administer venipuncture, catheter placements, and SQ/IM/IV injections; perform blood draws.
- Calculate drug dosages, prepare, and administer medications and non-Rabies vaccines according to clinic protocol.
- Conduct anesthesia induction and intubation; monitor and maintain proper levels during surgery with veterinarian supervision.
- Respond to the needs of all clients and staff with a high degree of urgency while communicating appropriate and pertinent medical information based on the audience.
- Assist with and perform other tasks as delegated.

What we’re looking for
- Veterinary Technician Certification or 1 to 3 years’ experience in a clinic setting.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule of mornings, afternoons, and evenings on weekdays; as well as nights, weekends, and non-standard hours as required at our South Elgin shelter and clinic locations.
- Genuine interest in learning more about animal welfare.
- Sense of comfort and ease handling animals with health and/or behavior issues.
- Certification in Fear Free Shelters methodology (training is provided).
- Ability to multi-task and adapt swiftly to changes in environment, protocol, and priorities.
- Can remain calm and professional in potentially stressful and emotional situations.
- Ability to maintain focus during frequent interruptions; work independently.
- Desire to work with the public.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills that showcase warmth and inclusivity.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite; highly comfortable learning new software.
