Ask Opal

Why is my dog acting like my personal glue stick?

Dear Opal,

Every time my dog hears a weird noise outside or a thunderstorm rolls in, he turns into a total shadow. He follows me from room to room, practically tripping me up, and tries to burrow himself right behind my legs. I try to comfort him by petting him and saying, "It's okay, buddy, you're safe!" in a soothing voice, but he just shakes and clings harder. Why is he acting like my personal glue stick, and how can I help him calm down? Signed, Overwhelmed by My Canine Shadow

Opal’s Answer

Dear Shadow,

As a chihuahua who routinely treats my human like a personal heating pad and protective fortress, I completely understand your dog’s instinct to seek out his favorite human when the world gets a little too loud!

When your dog feels anxious or spooked, seeking your physical closeness is his way of looking for safety. However, when you shower him with gentle pets and reassuring chatter while he is in a heightened state of fear, he doesn’t hear “you are safe”—he perceives your focused attention and soft voice as confirmation that there really is something to worry about! In a dog’s mind, you are validating his panic.

Your best course of action is to project calm, unbothered confidence. Instead of showering him with extra affection while he is trembling, remain completely composed and give him a comforting, structured alternative. Set up a cozy, quiet “safe zone” in your home—like a covered crate or an interior room with a soft bed, white noise, and a favorite chew toy. Guide him there calmly without a fuss. When you act as though storms and strange noises are no big deal, he will eventually look to your relaxed body language and learn that he doesn’t need to panic either.

Consistency is key, so stay patient and keep radiating that calm energy!

Love,

Opal
