You know that saying, “To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”
This is so true for Anderson Humane’s Animal Care Techs at our South Elgin shelter. They are the world to our dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies. Now, being an animal’s “world” is a serious job with a lot of responsibility, but your arrival is celebrated every time by happy animals who are so darn excited to see you! That’s pretty tough to beat. Trust us.
Need more reasons to apply?
- Our animals’ unconditional love and acceptance often delivered via sloppy dog kisses and rumbly kitty purrs.
- By providing our animals with care throughout the day, you’ll see firsthand their silliness and unique personalities emerge the more they get to know you.
- Our Animal Care Technicians start at $14 per hour.
- Our Employee Adoption Discount because pets are like potato chips, you can’t have just one.
- We offer a 401(k)-retirement program because retirement only seems like a lifetime away.
- This is a part-time role, so we can coordinate with your other commitments. Animal Care Technicians work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays with shifts between 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., seven days a week.
What you’ll be doing:
- Providing our animals with living spaces, toys, and bedding that are cleaned and sanitized throughout the day.
- Feeding our animals nutritious meals to ensure they’re getting the nourishment they need to thrive!
- Ensuring our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens flourish:
- Physically with multiple daily walks for dogs, and lots of play and exercise for all!
- Mentally by engaging them with challenging toys and puzzles…we call this enrichment!
- Socially with small “playgroups” and just by hanging with them yourself.
- Assisting with training new volunteers, interns, and staff because many hands make light work!
It’s true that dogs and puppies demand our immediate attention by loudly telling us what they need when they need it, but we ensure our cats and kittens are doted on (as well they should be)! So it’s essential that our Animal Care Technicians are at ease and comfortable caring for all of our animals.
What to expect:
- A loud and messy, but lively environment with animals of all sizes and characters.
- To follow all safety protocols and procedures to the letter. We do work with animals, after all.
- A mix of indoor and outdoor activities daily.
- To stay active; this is a very fast-paced and physically demanding role. You’ll be walking, standing, and lifting (up to 50 lbs. with help) throughout your day.
Intrigued? Let’s talk if:
- You have past professional experience in animal care, especially in a kennel setting (although it’s not a dealbreaker).
- You believe you’re pretty good at reading animal behavior.
- You’re courteous, respectful, and you demonstrate behavior that strengthens and supports our Animal Care team, including our volunteers who work alongside our staff daily. It’s so important that we welcome them, ask politely when we need their help, and communicate how valuable they are every chance we get!
- You can keep a cool head. Stress? Deadline? No problem! You focus, get the job done, and done well!
- You are just as happy working alone as being teamed up with others.
