Told by Dawn Takagi: Foster, Volunteer, Animal Advocate, and Healing Paws Team
For Dawn Takagi, the decision to join Anderson Humane as a volunteer foster was driven by a deep desire to show dogs that the world is not always a cruel place. She sought an organization that could meet the complex medical, social, and emotional needs of every animal, providing them with the second chance they so richly deserved. Dawn’s mission was simple yet profound: to be the bridge for dogs who had been failed by humans, guiding them toward the happy ending they had nearly lost.
An Ambassador of Healing
Dawn’s journey took an unexpected turn when she “foster failed” with a dog named Via. Rather than just becoming a cherished family member, Via took on a role of her own as an ambassador to every foster animal that has since entered their home. Via has an incredible gift for reading the behavior of other dogs—comforting the nervous, calming the scared, and teaching once-forgotten dogs how to simply be dogs again.
A Family Tradition of Kindness
What makes her journey truly extraordinary is that it has become a full family affair. When Dawn began fostering, her daughters were just seven and ten years old. Today, her youngest daughter can remarkably remember the names of all 75 fosters who have passed through their doors. By sharing the responsibility and love of fostering, Dawn has raised a new generation of animal advocates. Her daughters have grown up caring for animals, totally dependent upon them, taking shelter dogs on Doggy Day Out adventures, and providing a loving home for every soul in transition. For the Takagi family, fostering is a way to be a vital part of an animal’s journey toward their loving home.
A Hero for Generations
Dawn’s life is a tapestry of service, from her professional work as a dog walker to her twice-weekly volunteer shifts with stray animals. She knows that true change happens when we commit to the long-term well-being of those who cannot speak for themselves. This is the essence of a legacy: teaching our children the value of compassion and ensuring that organizations like Anderson Humane have the resources to keep these missions alive.
Dawn’s compassion for animals reaches far beyond her home. In addition to fostering, she gives her time at our Wildlife Center in Elburn, helping care for our most vulnerable wild patients. And alongside Via, she brings comfort and connection as part of our Healing Paws team—visiting seniors and others in our community, where a gentle presence and a warm paw can brighten even the hardest days.
