As Told by Stephanie Olson: Dedicated Foster
As we continue our Volunteer Appreciation Week celebration, we are deeply moved to share the story of Stephanie Olson. Stephanie’s path to fostering began with a heartbreaking loss in early 2022 when her “soulmate cat,” Theodore, passed away unexpectedly at just two years old. Determined to honor his spirit and continue his legacy, Stephanie turned her grief into action. Since then, she has opened her home to over 50 cats, proving that even in the wake of loss, there is an incredible capacity to save lives.
The Story of Marvin: Against All Odds
Among the many cat lives Stephanie has touched, one standout moment involves a tiny kitten named Marvin (originally Toe Beans). Part of a litter of kittens abandoned in a barn at just one week old, Marvin faced a grueling road to recovery. While his siblings thrived, Marvin struggled with a severe illness that eventually led to the removal of an eye, leaving him with only 10% vision in the other. Through months of round-the-clock care, emergency vet visits, and unwavering support, Stephanie refused to give up on him. Four months later, Marvin, who wasn’t expected to make it, became a permanent member of her family.
Fostering as a Path to Selflessness
To Stephanie, fostering is the ultimate act of selflessness. It is about giving pieces of yourself to animals that society might have overlooked, offering them “unconditional positive regard.” As a mental health counselor, Stephanie brings a unique perspective to her work with animals. She views fostering as a way to soften the heart and find optimism even when the world feels heavy. For her, the sadness of saying goodbye to a foster is always outweighed by the joy of knowing she has helped secure a wonderful future for a soul and the family who finds them.
A Difference for Animals and Humans Alike
Stephanie’s work has transformed not only the 50+ cats she has fostered but also her own outlook on life. Fostering has taught her patience and helped her evolve into a more empathetic human being. Her story reminds us that when we come together to support the most vulnerable among us, we strengthen our own core beliefs in kindness and community. We are incredibly grateful for Stephanie’s resilience and her dedication to keeping Theodore’s spirit alive through every life she saves.
