Volunteer Manager
The Volunteer Manager is dedicated to building an ever-increasing network of volunteer support for the organization. This role is responsible for volunteer recruitment, orientation, project planning, implementation and supervision of volunteer activities. This role should demonstrate the highest standards of behavior and ethics with a willingness to learn and adapt to changing priorities while thriving in a collaborative environment. This position also manages Volunteer Coordinator(s).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages Volunteer Coordinator(s) to assist with the implementation of the over-arching Volunteer
    Department roles and responsibilities outlined below.
  • Orients, trains, coaches, motivates, and evaluates new volunteers including individuals, groups, and court-ordered community service workers in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and programs. Provides ongoing volunteer education to increase their understanding of Anderson Humane, its services, and their role and responsibility within the organization to ensure a successful volunteer experience.
  • Works closely with all department heads as liaison between volunteers and staff to coordinate role details, training tools, changes in shift requirements, job responsibilities, and training requirements.
  • Assesses experience, skills, and limitations of volunteers to engage them in meaningful volunteer service.
  • Coordinates and develops volunteer groups including corporate, school, job training, scouting, etc. by confirming all necessary tools and resources are readily available and that all affected staff understand details and expectations.
  • Maintains volunteer calendar and ensures that volunteers hours are used productively, projects are completed in a timely manner, and that hours are being recorded correctly.
  • Constructively and cooperatively work to diffuse conflict by focusing on the facts, making sound decisions to resolve issue directly.
  • Plans and implements volunteer recognition activities to highlight the contribution of volunteers to the organization.
  • Creates and distributes volunteer communication via Constant Contact, text messages, email, and other sources as they are identified.
  • Calculates and presents program statistics for grants, marketing, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Meet or exceed volunteer department goals, ensuring quality customer service.
  • Consistently maintains a high degree of responsiveness to the needs and requests of all volunteer inquiries, as well as inquiries from volunteers and staff.
  • Understand the impact and importance of the quality of their personal work on others’ jobs, departments, and the organization overall.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A deep appreciation of the importance of respect for all life and a desire to model this behavior when dealing with animals and people.
  • Experience in animal welfare is preferred.
  • Highly detailed and organized with effective time management skills, willingness to learn and adapt, with the highest standards of behavior, collaborative manner and work ethic.
  • Strong management skills including planning, organization and supervision, ability to communicate with diverse groups of people.
  • Superior follow through skills as well as the ability to overcome objections and obstacles in the pursuit of success.
  • Exceptional one-on-one interpersonal skills, foster confidence and trust, listen sensitively, and respond appropriately while keeping professional boundaries.
  • Clear, concise communicator, both verbal and written in the English language. Bilingual English- Spanish preferred.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, self-motivation, organization, and resourcefulness.
  • Thrive and keep calm and professional in stressful conditions, negotiate different personalities, and work under competing priorities while managing a wide variety of tasks.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Constant Contact, and other applications as well experience using a volunteer database is preferred.
  • Must be prompt, dependable, and flexible to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to focus, multi-task and work confidently meeting deadlines without becoming overwhelmed and with minimal supervision.
  • Is mature, morally sound, compassionate, attentive, reliable, and honest with an outgoing, participatory work style.
  • Can keep focused during frequent interruptions and can swiftly adapt to change in environment, protocol and priorities when necessary.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license as at times the successful candidate may drive an Anderson vehicle.

Physical Requirements

  •  Ability to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to 8 hours a day; able to lift up to 50 lbs.with assistance; able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends is required.
  • Shared cubicle/office space possible; exposure to animals; potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, animal bites, and scratches; exposure to high noise levels and odors is expected.
