Enrichment: Helping Dogs and Cats Thrive at Anderson Humane and at Home

On a sunny afternoon at Anderson Humane, a volunteer crouches in the grass, holding a knotted towel filled with treats. A curious pup bounds over, tail wagging, nose twitching as it searches for the hidden reward. In another room, a cat bats at a feather toy, eyes wide with excitement, before pausing to listen to the faint chirps of birds playing softly in the background.

Scenes like these happen here every day — and they’re not just for fun. They’re part of something essential: Enrichment.

At Anderson Humane, enrichment is more than just an activity; it’s an essential part of how we care for animals, both in our shelter and in their future homes. Enrichment meets an animal’s physical, mental, and emotional needs, helping them feel safe, healthy, and happy while encouraging natural behaviors.

For dogs, much of enrichment centers on their “superpower” — an incredible sense of smell. Scent-based activities help keep them calm, engaged, and mentally stimulated. For cats, enrichment often taps into their exceptional hearing, physical play, and social connection needs. By tailoring activities to each species’ unique strengths, we create more fulfilling experiences for them every day.

Physical Activity: More Than Just Exercise

Physical exercise is a critical part of enrichment. For our dogs, regular walks are a key part of their daily routine and overall well-being. Each dog enjoys at least four (often more) walks or play periods outside their kennel every day. These outings are so much more than bathroom breaks; they provide exercise, exploration, social interaction, and stress relief.

Physical activity reduces anxiety, improves health, and channels energy into positive behaviors. It also gives dogs a change of scenery and a chance to engage their senses, which is just as important for happiness as it is for training and adoptability.

Mental Stimulation and Training

Alongside walks, our Level 2 All-Star Trainers play a big role in keeping dogs’ minds active. These skilled volunteers and staff work one-on-one and in small groups, using games that challenge a dog’s mind and build trust.

Activities such as “sit,” “touch,” and “find it” help dogs practice focus, problem-solving, and engagement. Trainers also work on loose leash walking skills, which boost adoptability and make every walk more enjoyable for the dog and their future family. This combination of play and skill-building is essential for keeping dogs mentally sharp and emotionally balanced.

Enrichment You Can Try at Home

You don’t have to spend much money to enrich your pet’s life. Many activities can be made with items you already have at home. Here are a few of our shelter favorites:

Feeding Challenges

Change up mealtime to make it more engaging. Try placing wet food inside an empty egg carton, tying it closed, and putting it inside a paper bag. Your dog will love tearing into it, activating their foraging instincts. Always use clean cardboard or paper materials. Never use plastic, metal, or anything that could be harmful. Supervise your pet at all times.

Towel Knot Treats

Roll treats into a towel, tie it into a knot, and let your dog sniff and paw it apart. This blends scent work with problem-solving, keeping them happily occupied. Be sure to supervise to prevent chewing or swallowing fabric.

Scent Play

Lightly spray dog-safe essential oils near your pet’s bedding to stimulate their sense of smell. For cats, try auditory enrichment like gentle nature sounds or toys that mimic prey movement for active play sessions. Always confirm scents are safe for pets before use.

These activities provide more than entertainment; they help animals burn energy, relieve stress, and build confidence.

Enrichment is a Team Effort

At Anderson Humane, enrichment is a daily commitment. Volunteer leaders like Deb Staky, who heads our enrichment and transport teams, ensure that more than 35 volunteers work together to provide stimulating, fear-free experiences for every animal in our care. From interactive feeding games to sensory experiences, our goal is to help each dog and cat feel safe, content, and ready for a loving home.

Together, we can make life richer, happier, and healthier for the animals who need us most.
