Denise’s Journey: The Power of Presence

As Told by Denise Johnson: Dedicated Volunteer

During Volunteer Appreciation Week at Anderson Humane, we pause to recognize the people who quietly change lives every single day. Denise Johnson is one of those people.

What began as a simple desire to give back, rooted in a lifelong love for dogs and a new chapter as her children grew older, has become something far deeper. Denise explored different volunteer roles, from hands-on animal care to helping at fundraising events. What she found wasn’t just the right fit, it was a purpose that would touch lives far beyond what she imagined.

An Unexpected Connection

One of the most rewarding surprises of Denise’s time at Anderson Humane has been her involvement with our Military Veterans Program (MVP). Through this program, which fosters positive connections between veterans and animals, Denise began volunteering alongside Brett, a military veteran navigating life with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). What started as a way to help animals has blossomed into a deep, meaningful friendship. Every Thursday morning, Denise, Brett, and Brett’s father come together to care for puppies, but their bond goes far beyond the shelter walls as they share vacation stories and life updates.

Healing Through Puppies

For Denise, volunteering is about the “feel-good” experience that happens when humans and animals connect. Watching the puppies interact with Brett is a testament to the therapeutic power of animals. These moments are a two-way street of healing: the puppies receive vital socialization and love, while Brett finds joy and companionship in their presence. By facilitating these interactions, Denise has made a tangible difference in the lives of both the animals and the people who care for them, proving that the heart of volunteering is often found in the relationships we build.

Building a Legacy of Kindness

The Power of Showing Up

Denise reminds us that volunteering isn’t just about giving time, it’s about giving heart. It’s about showing up, week after week, and becoming part of something bigger than yourself. Because when you do, the impact ripples outward…to animals, to people, to an entire community.

Denise, thank you. For your dedication. For your compassion. For the way you bring people and animals together in ways that heal and inspire.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could make a difference, you can. Just like Denise, it starts with showing up.

Join Our Volunteer Family

By volunteering with Anderson Humane, you join dedicated individuals like Denise in our shared commitment to animal welfare and community connection. Your involvement ensures that we can continue to provide the vital social support and dedicated time that shelter animals need to feel safe and secure. By offering a patient presence and helping animals socialize, you help ease their transition from the shelter environment into a loving home, preparing them for the day they meet their forever family.

If you are inspired by Denise’s journey and are interested in making a difference through our volunteer programs, we would love to hear from you. Your compassion provides the comfort these animals deserve while they wait for their next step.
