91 Beagles Saved
Anderson Humane participated in national efforts to rescue 4,000 beagles from Envigo, a breeding and research facility in Virginia that was recently found guilty of dozens of federal regulation violations, resulting in dogs being ill, injured, underfed, and, in the worst cases, dead. We were able to save 91 dogs and find them safe, loving, and happy homes.
Our staff made the nearly 800-mile trip to Virginia and arrived at our shelter in South Elgin around midnight on Monday, August 8. Staff and volunteers carried the dogs one-by-one to pens outside so the animals could stretch their legs. These dogs have never been walked on a leash or worn a collar. They then carried them to crates to sleep through their last night in a facility.
On Tuesday, staff and volunteers carried each beagle through an intake process. They received any needed vaccines and microchips. Each dog was finally given a name to replace the numbers they had been known by, tattooed inside their ears. Foster families arrived to take these dogs home, at last.
