On a sunny Sunday afternoon
in North Aurora, a line of people holding purple Anderson Humane folders quickly formed outside the Pet Supplies Plus store. There were families and couples and people from as far away as Lake in the Hills all chatting patiently while they waited for their turn to adopt one of the 75 cats and dogs available at this special event.
“They knew that at the end of their wait they’d be taking home their new best friend, their new family member,” said Lesya Kercheval, the Senior Adoption & Resource Coach Manager for Anderson Humane. Lesya was also one of the main organizers of this pet adoption event celebrating our five years of partnership with Pet Supplies Plus in North Aurora.
At the end of the five-hour event, 58 animals were no longer homeless and dozens of households in the community were filled with a fresh joy.
“It was really amazing to see how we were able to work together with Pet Supplies Plus to get so many animals placed,” said Dean Daubert, Chief Operations Officer for Anderson Humane, adding that he was especially excited to see several adult dogs adopted at the event.
“We send highly adoptable dogs and cats to our satellite locations, including our North Aurora adoption center next to Pet Supplies Plus, which gives us the ability to spend extra time with the animals who need more attention to become adoptable,” Dean said. “This partnership helps us achieve our overall mission.”
The success of the adoption event was also due to the nearly two dozen Anderson Humane volunteers who worked at the event and the several more dozen foster families who opened their homes to these cats and dogs in the weeks prior to the event. “Our volunteers and fosters are just awesome,” Lesya said.
She especially enjoyed overhearing many of the attendees waiting in line talking about how wonderful it was to be getting a new pet and how happy they were. “It’s amazing how people came forward for these animals,” she said.
With these 58 adoptions, 412 pets have found their forever people at this adoption center since the beginning of the year, and nearly 5,000 since the facility opened five years ago. Anderson Humane and Pet Supplies Plus staff are grateful for all the connections we’ve been able to make, and the connections still to be made in the next five years . . . and well beyond.
