CARTER’S THREE-YEAR STORY OF HOPE

A LONG JOURNEY MADE POSSIBLE BY YOU

For three long years, a loyal German Shepherd/Lab mix named Carter watched the world go by from his kennel at Anderson Humane.

Arriving in May 2023, Carter was a big, beautiful boy with a gentle heart, a love for hikes, and a bright spirit. But the loud, stressful shelter environment is hard on a sensitive dog.

Carter was cautious with strangers. He was a dog who couldn’t be rushed; he needed a slow approach, a few tossed cookies, and multiple visits just to show the deep love he had to give. When potential adopters look forward to taking a dog home on day one, finding someone patient enough to earn Carter’s trust at his own pace felt like searching for a needle in a haystack.

But Carter was never truly alone.

A wonderful volunteer named Christine became his biggest champion, visiting him several days a week to take him on “Doggy Day Outs” along the peaceful river and forest preserves. Our volunteer community rallied behind him, too, raising over $6,000 during a fundraiser.

Still, near-adoptions fell through, and hearts broke as the months turned into years.

Then, a beautiful spark of hope arrived.

A family who had previously adopted from Anderson reached out. They understood that the best things in life take time. For months, they faithfully visited Carter, taking him to his favorite walking spots and slowly introducing him to their own dog Faith. The connection was undeniable.

The final piece of the puzzle was a weekend sleepover.

Knowing Carter’s profound love for water, his foster family set up a kiddie pool in the backyard. Carter and his new furry best friend splashed around, tasting the pure joy of belonging. When he had to return to his kennel that Sunday, Carter pouted for a week. He missed the love of a family and the warmth of a home. What he didn’t know was that he had passed the test with flying colors and that he was a week away from going home for good.

On Sunday, May 31, 2026, the long wait finally ended.

Surrounded by a sea of cheering volunteers, staff, and his biggest advocate, Christine, Carter walked out of our doors and into his new life.

There are so many dogs just like Carter sitting in shelters right now…overwhelmed by the noise, acting timid or scared, and repeatedly being passed up because they don’t make a perfect first impression.

They just need someone to look a little closer, visit a little longer, and offer a patient hand. As Carter’s family now knows, those are the very dogs who end up filling your life with the most extraordinary love.

It is truly thanks to our dedicated donors and compassionate community that we can provide essential medical care, food, and enrichment that support Carter and all the other animals in our care during their stay.

Happy tails, sweet pup. You earned every bit of this.
