Story #29: Hazel’s Journey Home

As told by Paul Seidlitz, Adopter

Meeting Hazel

I first met Hazel when she was in a foster home, and from the moment our eyes met, I felt a connection. She had traveled all the way from Louisiana and was recovering from heartworm treatment. Despite everything she had already been through, there was a quiet confidence about her, a gentle curiosity that drew me in. I knew she was special, but I stepped back and gave myself time to be sure. Anderson Humane had already brought four cats and two dogs into my life, and Hazel would become number seven.

When the day came to bring her home, she needed just a little coaxing to get into the car.

Once inside, she curled up and fell asleep as if she already knew she was safe. That small gesture told me all I needed to know about her trusting heart.

Arriving home, the backyard was new and wide open, something she wasn’t used to. Her foster home had no fence, so the space was unfamiliar. I walked her around, keeping her on the lead, letting her explore at her own pace. Day by day, she grew more confident. Today, she runs freely, sniffing for rabbits and squirrels, enjoying her space with a joyful curiosity.

Snow was another adventure.

Being a girl from the south, Hazel wasn’t sure what to make of it.

With patience, encouragement, and plenty of gentle guidance, she figured it out. Every small triumph reminded me how resilient and adaptable she is when she feels safe and loved.

Her heartworm treatment was successful, and now Hazel is strong, healthy, and full of life.

Eighteen months have passed since Hazel joined our family, and I cannot imagine life without her.

She is a loyal watch dog, a playful companion, and a constant source of joy. We’ve visited Anderson Humane together since her adoption, returning to the place that started our story.

I am deeply thankful to Anderson Humane and Hazel’s foster family. Hazel didn’t just find a home with me…she brought warmth, comfort, and laughter into my life. Every day with her feels like a gift, and I treasure every moment we share.
