Story #27: Snuggles and the Ducks
As told by Marlayne Malmgren, Adopter, Volunteer & Donor
A Tiny Tabby with a Big Heart
In 2012, after saying goodbye to a beloved cat, I wasn’t sure my heart was ready to love again. But when I visited Anderson Humane, I met Snuggles, a tiny three-month-old tabby with bright eyes and a curious spirit. From the moment I held her, I knew she was meant to be part of my life. Bringing Snuggles home didn’t just fill a void…it sparked a joy that would grow with every playful pounce and affectionate cuddle.
From Loving at Home to Giving Back
Snuggles inspired me to get more involved with Anderson Humane. I began volunteering, helping prepare games for dogs, cutting treats, and assisting wherever the shelter needed a hand. Each task, no matter how small, reminded me that care and attention make a difference for every animal who walks through the doors. Volunteering strengthened my bond with the animals I love and allowed me to be part of their journey in meaningful ways.
One of the most unforgettable experiences came through Anderson’s annual Gala.
Volunteering also brought unexpected adventures. At the annual Gala, I won a wildlife release experience with the Anderson team. That spring, I traveled to the Fox River in St. Charles to help release baby ducks back into the wild. As the ducklings swam to a female they seemed to recognize as their mother, I felt a deep connection to all the lives I had touched through volunteering. It was a magical reminder that animals, whether at the shelter or in the wild, thrive when they are cared for and supported.
The Joy of Giving Back
Snuggles, the dogs I helped at the shelter, and even the ducklings I released all taught me the same lesson: compassion changes lives. Anderson Humane has touched mine in countless ways, inspiring me to volunteer, donate, and advocate for animals every day. Through love, attention, and patience, we can create a world where every animal has a safe place, and every person has the chance to experience the joy that comes from giving back.
