Story #21: Bagel Bites, Squirt, Pepper, and Buddy
We began fostering Bagel Bites and her four kittens in the spring, hoping to adopt just a pair of the kittens. Bagel Bites was the sweetest mom, and we were overjoyed when she quickly found a loving home. Squirt and Pepper became part of our family, joining our resident cat, Cranberry, a dignified rescue from the Universal Cat Distribution System.
The transition was not without its challenges. Squirt became our silent observer, riding on shoulders and watching the world before taking action. Pepper lived entirely in the moment, squeaking for attention until it was given. Cranberry, as ever, maintained her regal composure, tolerating her new housemates with gentle patience. Through it all, the humans in the house were adored.
In October, our hearts were tugged again when we learned about Treble, a back-leg amputee kitten who needed foster care. Though we thought we were done collecting black cats, we brought him home. Almost immediately, Treble, renamed Buddy, stole our hearts and became a permanent part of our family. He was unflappable, even appearing on WGN in Dean Daubert’s lap to show off just how calm and loving a black cat could be.
Buddy quickly integrated himself into the household. Squirt became his follower and friend, Cranberry allowed him a sniff before retreating with dignity, and Pepper accepted him while still demanding human attention. Together, the four have become a unique clowder, full of personality, affection, and the occasional mischief.
After losing our beloved 16-year-old cat this winter, we were not sure our hearts were ready to love again. These four goofballs have healed us in ways we did not know we needed. Watching Buddy adapt with only one back leg has been inspiring. He simply moves forward, resilient and joyful. Our nine-year-old granddaughter watches and learns from their courage and gentleness, gaining life lessons in empathy and compassion.
Through laughter, cuddles, and unexpected moments of connection, our home has been filled with love, comfort, and balance. These four cats have reminded us that even after loss, life can be full, warm, and joyful again.
