60 Stories in 60 Days: A Second Chance at Love

Story #17 of 60: How Benito Changed My Life
As told by Irma Elliott, Adopter

Many years ago, I had a cat who was with me for 13 wonderful years. When she passed away, the loss was so deep that I didn’t feel ready to adopt again for a very long time. I truly believed that chapter of my life had closed.

Then one day, I saw Benito on the Anderson Humane website and instantly fell in love. Something about him just felt right. I called right away, and two days later, I received a call to schedule an appointment to meet him.

Meeting Benito was incredibly impactful. He was friendly, handsome, and immediately affectionate. I fell in love with him on the spot. When I brought him home, he quickly showed me just how special he was. Benito is sweet, gentle, and incredibly well-behaved. He gives the best snuggles, loves pâté, and truly enjoys playtime. He is even learning how to sit for treats, which only shows how smart he is.

Bringing Benito into my life healed a part of my heart I didn’t realize was still hurting. After years of not feeling ready, he reminded me how much joy, comfort, and companionship a cat can bring. His playful energy, gentle presence, and endless affection have filled my home with warmth and happiness. Benito didn’t just become my pet. He became family.

As Anderson Humane celebrates 60 years, I feel compelled to share my story as a reminder of the life-changing impact this organization has on both animals and the people who adopt them. After years of believing I wasn’t ready to open my heart again, Anderson Humane brought Benito into my life at exactly the right moment. Their compassion and dedication made it possible for me to find not just a pet, but a companion who brought healing, joy, and love back into my home.

Celebrating this milestone feels like celebrating the countless second chances created for animals like Benito and for people like me.
