Rookie Volunteers: Going the Extra Mile for Animals in Need

At Anderson Humane, we’re lucky to have a community of volunteers who show up with compassion, dedication, and heart. Among them, our Rookie Volunteers stand out as some of the most committed and highly trained members of our team.

These volunteers go above and beyond to work with animals who need a little extra help—those who may be shy, anxious, or in need of additional training and socialization before they find their forever homes. To take on this important role, Rookies complete eight additional weeks of hands-on training with our Behavior Manager. During this time, they learn advanced techniques in fear-free handling, enrichment, and care protocols tailored specifically to animals requiring more support.

Once trained, Rookie Volunteers:

  • Walk and work with our Level 2 dogs—animals that need more structure and behavioral support

  • Provide enrichment through games, training, and interactive toys to keep pets mentally and physically engaged

  • Participate in our popular Doggie Day Out program, giving adoptable dogs a break from the shelter and a chance to shine outside their kennels (learn more about Doggie Day Out)

  • Help prepare animals for adoption by building trust, reinforcing positive behaviors, and being consistent, caring companions

Their impact is powerful—and personal.

“These volunteers are often the first people to earn the trust of animals who’ve never had a positive human connection,” says Christa Oody, Volunteer Program Manager. “They are essential to our mission and the healing journey of so many animals in our care.”

Celebrating New Graduates!

We’re proud to share that nine of our current staff members recently completed Rookie Volunteer training—bringing their knowledge and compassion to an even higher level. Their commitment helps ensure every animal, no matter their background, gets a fair chance at finding the right home.
