60 Stories in 60 Days: The Dogs Who Healed Our Hearts

Story #33: Brooks, Winnie, and the Gift of Second Chances

As told by Rebecca O’Brien, Foster & Adopter

A Hesitant Start

My sister introduced me to Anderson Humane when I was ready to open my home to a foster dog. I applied for two dogs, but I only brought one home. A few days later, on the way back from his neuter appointment, I fell down the stairs outside the shelter and fractured my foot. I was in a walking boot for a couple of months.

Through it all, Brooks stayed by my side. From the very first day, he seemed to understand that I was hurt and needed comfort. His calm, loyal nature won my heart quickly, and it did not take long before I realized that fostering him was not enough. Brooks had to stay. We adopted him, and he immediately became part of our family. He fit right in with my kids, bringing laughter, love, and companionship into our home.

Five months later, we decided to foster a Great Pyrenees puppy to give Brooks a friend and to provide another dog a safe, loving space.

The puppy, just two months old, bonded instantly with Brooks. They clicked in a way that felt natural, as if they had always been siblings. It was clear from the start that fostering her would not be temporary. She joined our family permanently, and we named her Winnie.

Watching Brooks and Winnie grow together has been a joy. Brooks is smart, affectionate, and full of personality. He loves hugs, cuddles, and his favorite toys. Winnie adores Brooks, enjoys exploring the yard, and has even claimed her favorite couch in the house. They are inseparable and bring so much energy and happiness into our home.

Brooks and Winnie came into our home at exactly the right time.

Before I met Brooks, I had recently lost my Guide Dog unexpectedly and was feeling sad and unsettled. Brooks lifted my spirits, and when Winnie joined us, she made Brooks so happy that our entire household felt lighter and fuller. Together, they reminded me how animals can heal hearts and transform a home.

Our house is now full of laughter, adventure, and love.

Brooks and Winnie enjoy walks, playing in the yard, trips to doggy daycare, cookies, warm blankets in winter, and even the pool in summer. They are truly family. Seeing them happy, healthy, and loved every day reminds me how special shelter dogs are. They have so much love to give, and when you give them a chance, they return it tenfold.

I am forever grateful to Anderson Humane for giving me the opportunity to foster and adopt these two amazing dogs.

Brooks and Winnie have filled our home with joy, comfort, and unconditional love. They remind me that sometimes the best companions are the ones who choose you at exactly the right time.

They will always have a safe, happy home with us, and every day with them is a reminder of how much shelter dogs can change a life.
