60 Stories in 60 Days: A Lifetime of Love

Story #39: The Love That Keeps on Growing

As told by Barb Fint, Adopter & Volunteer

Way back in 1979, my mother and youngest sister went to Anderson Animal Shelter and came home with my first childhood pup, Snowflake.

She was a beautiful, gentle dog who became my constant companion throughout my childhood. Snowflake lived a wonderful life for almost 18 years, and even now, decades later, the love I felt for her remains as vivid as ever.

Fast forward to 2023, and my life had changed in so many ways.

I decided to volunteer at Anderson Humane, helping with dog care at the shelter. I have always been a longtime dog lover and a firm believer in “Adopt Don’t Shop.”

Volunteering gave me a new perspective on the incredible work the shelter does every day to care for and support animals.

Over the past 11 years, I have had the joy of sharing my life with two rescue pittie mixes, Nina & Aubrey.

They are full of personality, affection, and joy, and some days I swear my Nina is the reincarnation of little Snowflake. The love I feel for these two dogs is immense, and it continues to grow every single day.

The love of your first pet never leaves you, but it has a way of growing and expanding as new companions enter your life. My heart has been completely transformed by these two rescues, and I want to share that love with all the animals who are still waiting for their next chapter.

Volunteering at Anderson Humane has given me the chance to help animals in a more meaningful way.

Every animal deserves a caring home and someone to advocate for them. Every person can make a difference, whether it’s through donating time, money, or supplies. Every little bit helps. When our community comes together, we can make sure every animal finds a loving home.

I am grateful every day for the work Anderson Humane does, for the animals I have had the privilege of loving, and for the chance to give back.

From Snowflake to Nina, my life has been shaped by the love of rescue dogs. They teach patience, joy, and the true meaning of unconditional love.

The love of your first pet never fades, but it also never stops growing.

My heart has room for every pawprint, every wag, and every wet nose. And now, as a volunteer, I get to help others create the same kind of lifelong love and connection.

Every animal deserves to be loved, and every volunteer, donor, or adopter has the power to make that happen.
